Name and Cultural Origin:
Also known as the “Strawberry Moon,” it takes its name from the Algonquin tribes of North America, who associated it with the harvest of wild strawberries in June.In Europe, it is also called the “Honey Moon” or “Rose Moon,” as it coincides with the blooming of flowers and the gathering of honey during this time.
When and Why Was It Special?
It reached its peak on June 11, 2025, at 07:44 UTC (02:44 CDT in Mexico, and around dawn in the U.S.).It was the lowest Full Moon in nearly two decades in the Northern Hemisphere (due to the lunar standstill that occurs every 18.6 years), appearing with a golden-orange glow close to the horizon. It will remain the lowest Full Moon until 2043, staying unusually close to the horizon. In contrast, in the Southern Hemisphere, it was the highest Full Moon until 2043.In the Northern Hemisphere, it marks the beginning of Astronomical Summer, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it begins Astronomical Winter.
