OM (ॐ)

t is one of the most sacred symbols in the spiritual traditions of India, especially in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. OM (also written AUM) is a sacred mantra.

It is considered the original, primordial sound of the universe—the vibration that gave birth to all that exists. In the Vedic texts, it is said:

“In the beginning was the sound, and the sound was OM.”

This symbol holds profound spiritual and philosophical meaning, and is widely used in practices such as meditation, yoga, and connection with the divine.

The word “Om” comes from Sanskrit, and its pronunciation is a vibration that encompasses the three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep dreamless sleep. According to the Vedic scriptures, OM represents the sound of creation, preservation, and dissolution of the cosmos—that is, all that is, was, and ever will be.

Composition of OM (A-U-M):

  • A represents birth or creation (the beginning)

  • U represents life or existence (the continuation)

  • M represents death or transformation (the end)

The silence that follows the mantra represents the infinite, the eternal, the All.This makes OM a mantra that represents the complete cycle of existence.

The Sound of OM Contains the Three Planes of Existence:

• Bhur – the Earth, the physical plane

• Bhuvah – the mental or subtle plane

• Svah – the spiritual or celestial plane

This means that every time you chant OM, you are activating your connection to the three levels of being: body, mind, and spirit. That’s why it is said that chanting OM is praying with the entire soul.

Meaning:

• The primordial vibration: OM symbolizes the original vibration that gave birth to the universe. It is the first and the last vibration, connecting all beings and the cosmos in universal unity.

• The all and the nothing: The OM symbol represents both everything and nothing, the infinite and the finite. It encompasses the three aspects of existence: creation, preservation, and destruction.
